Cranberry Hibiscus

Cranberry Hibiscus

$4.50Price

Cranberry Hibiscus is a short-lived perennial shrub that thrives in the South East Queensland climate due to it preferring a warm and wet environment. The leaf colour is a deep cranberry red and looks wonderful as an ornamental in the garden. A very nutritious vegetable; the leaves are high in vitamins B3 (niacin), B2, A and C. Also high in protein and an excellent source of antioxidants and anthocyanins. Young leaves have a tart flavour, eaten either raw or cooked. As the leaves contain oxalic acid, cranberry hibiscus should not be eaten in large amounts, such as the only raw green vegetable in a salad or more than once a week.

Planting Info
Plant 60cm apart, the plant grows rapidly to 1.7m high, leaves look similar to a Japanese maple. Prefers full sun but will grow in part shade. Ample watering, rich, well-drained fertile soil that is kept mulched. Reponds well to pruning, becomes a bushy shrub.
