Shallots
Shallots have a mild onion/garlic flavour and are very versatile to be used in any recipe calling for onions, especially where you prefer a milder taste. They are especially good sauteed in butter and added to recipes, topped on warm potatoes, added to quiches, fritattas or chopped up in salads. Shallots can also substitute for scallions or spring onions. Since shallots are mild in flavor, they are great raw or cooked.
Growing Info
A perennial herb and very easy to grow. Plant seedlings approx 10-20cms apart in a sunny well drained position. Best to prepare soil a couple months ahead prior to planting. For a good crop shallots prefer rich, loamy soil. Require watering once or twice weekly during drier periods. Harvest after about 60 days (before flowering). A single bulb usually multiplies into 6-12 bulbs.
